Georgia’s Future Academy has filed a complaint against Imedi TV, demanding a correction of false statements broadcast on air and accountability for violations of the obligations established under the Law of Georgia on Broadcasting.

According to the amendments to the Law on Broadcasting adopted on 1 April 2025, broadcasters are prohibited from covering current public or political issues based on their personal opinions or biases.

Contrary to this requirement, journalists of Imedi TV systematically portray the activities of Georgia’s Future Academy in a negative light, inciting public hostility toward the organization, its leadership, and the young people involved in its projects.

Moreover, under the same law, a broadcaster may record a telephone conversation with a respondent only if it has clearly identified itself, explained the purpose of the call, and informed the respondent that the conversation is being recorded and may be broadcast. In violation of these provisions, the Imedi TV journalist Mariam Oshkhneli falsely claimed to be a parent interested in enrolling a child in the Academy’s programs, without identifying herself as a journalist and warning that the conversation was being recorded.

On these grounds, Georgia’s Future Academy has submitted a complaint to the National Communications Commission of Georgia, requesting that Imedi TV be held accountable as a broadcaster.

In parallel, Georgia’s Future Academy and its founder, Aleksandre Zibzibadze, demand that Imedi TV acknowledge and correct the false statements broadcast about their activities. Under the law, broadcasters are obliged to report news and fact-based information with due accuracy and impartiality, and to take all reasonable measures to prevent the dissemination of false or misleading content. In contrast, Imedi TV continuously disseminates misleading and false information in its “Imedis Kvira” reports, defaming the Academy and its leadership.

Georgia’s Future Academy will no longer leave unchallenged the targeted, defamatory accusations broadcast by propaganda television outlets controlled by the Georgian Dream regime, and plans to pursue all available legal avenues both domestically and abroad. We will continue to fight to preserve freedom hubs in Georgia as a counterweight to the Georgian Dream’s authoritarian agenda and to ensure that young people have access to European-style civic education.
